AAMC Statement on Administration's BBA Relief Package
Jordan J. Cohen, M.D., President
Association of American Medical Colleges
June 20, 2000
The AAMC applauds the Clinton Administration for recognizing the financial plight of today's health care providers and for offering much needed relief from the crushing weight of the Balanced Budget Act of 1997 (BBA).
The Administration's proposal contains several important features. First, it recognizes the key role Medicare plays in ensuring the future financial viability of health care providers. Second, the plan acknowledges the need to provide both a prescription drug benefit to Medicare beneficiaries and BBA relief to providers. And finally, the proposal addresses a broad range of fiscal problems affecting the provider community, including the special needs of teaching hospitals.
Overall, the Administration's proposal underscores the firm linkage between the quality of care available to Medicare beneficiaries and the financial well being of health care providers. The AAMC looks forward to working with the President, the Vice President and the Congress on this important initiative.
