AAMC Statement on Selection of Greg Koski to Head OHRP

Jordan J. Cohen, M.D., President
Association of American Medical Colleges
June 6, 2000

Washington, D.C., June 6, 2000--The AAMC is pleased with the selection of Greg Koski, M.D., Ph.D., as the director of the HHS Office of Human Research Protections (OHRP). Dr. Koski is highly respected within the academic medical community and brings to the new office a strong track record in the area of human subject protections. His years as head of human research affairs at Massachusetts General Hospital will serve him well as he wades into the highly charged atmosphere currently surrounding patient safety in clinical research.

Once again, HHS Secretary Donna Shalala and the Clinton Administration are to be applauded for attracting a person of Dr. Koski's caliber, and for continuing to raise awareness of the importance of human subject protections. In addition to Koski's appointment, the recommendations announced recently by HHS to protect human subjects, the placement of OHRP in the Secretary's office, and the creation of a new external advisory committee for the Office, all demonstrate a significant federal commitment.

The AAMC looks forward to working with Dr. Koski to create the safest environment possible for participants in clinical research.
