Clinical Research Roundtable Members are Named
Panel Created in Response to AAMC Report
Washington, D.C., May 31, 2000--The Institute of Medicine (IOM) has established the Clinical Research Roundtable. The panel's creation is in direct response to a recommendation put forth by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and other leading medical organizations in the report entitled Clinical Research: A National Call to Action. The Association's David Korn, M.D., senior vice president of the Division of Biomedical and Health Sciences Research, is a member of the IOM expert panel.
The roundtable will provide a forum and sponsor workshops for discussion of approaches to resolve both acute and long-term issues affecting clinical research. The panel will strive to enhance mutual understanding of clinical research among the scientific community and the general public, while enhancing the public's participation in clinical studies. The 28-member roundtable is chaired by William Gerberding, Ph.D., of the University of Washington. The panel brings together individuals from the academic health community, federal agencies sponsoring and regulating clinical research, private sector sponsors of clinical research, foundation, public and private sector insurance programs, corporate purchasers of health care, and representatives of patient interests to discuss the challenges facing clinical research.
The first meeting of the roundtable will be held June 27 from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, D.C. Speakers will include David Kaufman, professor of pathology and laboratory medicine, University of North Carolina Medical School; Daniel Foster, chairman, department of internal medicine, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas; and Jules Hirsh, professor emeritus and senior physician, Rockefeller University, New York City.
The Call for Action resulted from a two-year process. More than 175 representatives were enlisted by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), the American Medical Association (AMA) and Wake Forest University in a Clinical Research Summit project that was supported by seven foundations. Throughout the various stages of the project, participants put aside individual concerns to hammer out a broad and inclusive agenda. The summit released its final report in November 1999.
Seating is limited for the June 27 roundtable. Reporters who wish to attend should register in advance at 202-334-2138.
