AAMC Expert Panels to Focus on Medical School Curricula in Health Care Quality, Clinical Research, and Basic Science

Washington, D.C., May 31, 2000--The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) recently established three Medical School Objective Project (MSOP) expert panels on health care quality, clinical research, and basic science to set forth program-level learning objectives that medical school deans and faculties can use as guidelines in reviewing their medical student education programs. The AAMC MSOP is a national initiative developed in 1998 to expand consensus on the key attributes physicians should possess to meet their individual and collective responsibilities to society.

The panel on quality of care issues is chaired by Paul B. Batalden, M.D., Dartmouth Medical School. The panel will discuss the quality of care issues medical students should be familiar with and the educational experiences needed to allow them to achieve those learning objectives. The AAMC MSOP's heightened focus on quality of care issues stems, in part, from the report on medical errors issued by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) last year. The IOM report clearly identified the need for physicians to have a greater awareness of patient safety issues.

The panel on clinical research is chaired by Dennis Ausiello, M.D., Massachusetts General Hospital. The group will explore what students should learn to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to interpret and apply the results of clinical research into their patient care activities, and to become constructive participants in clinical research activities. In the fall, the AAMC issued a national call to action recognizing that clinical research is not adequately understood or valued-by the public or the government.

Kenneth I. Berns, M.D., Ph.D., University of Florida College of Medicine, chairs the new panel that will focus on the basic science knowledge that medical students should acquire, and how that knowledge can best be learned during the course of undergraduate medical education. The AAMC is committed to improving the quality of medical education as it relates to the extraordinary growth that has occurred in recent years in the knowledge of molecular and cellular biology, and the application of that knowledge to the clinical disciplines of pathology, pharmacology, immunology, and genetics.

Each panel will be responsible for the compilation of a report by next winter.

To date, three MSOP reports have been issued. The first MSOP report presented 30 program-level learning objectives, representing a consensus within the medical education community on the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that students should possess before graduation from medical school. The second report focused on the two interrelated topics of medical informatics and population health. The third report discussed the importance of effective communication in medicine, summarizing the current state of communications skills teaching and assessment and offering an action plan for improving communications skills education.
