AAMC's MCAT Announces Graduate Student Research Program Scholars


Washington, D.C., April 21, 2000 -- The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) program announces the appointment of three graduate students specializing in educational measurement to the 2000 MCAT Graduate Student Research Program (GSRP). Under the supervision of a faculty member from their home campus, the scholars will spend the summer conducting extensive research projects using MCAT data. The students' final papers will be presented and published in the new MCAT Monograph Series.

The three 2000 GSRP scholars are: Brad Moulder, University of Florida, Mentor-James Algina; Russell Smith, University of Nebraska at Lincoln, Mentor-Barbara Plake; and Kelly Alanis, University of Colorado at Boulder, Mentor-Lorrie Shephard. Each scholar will receive $5000 and each mentor $1000.

Last year's GSRP scholars will be presenting a summary of their projects and results at an April 25 National Council on Measurement in Education symposium, entitled "Making an Informed Choice among Item Response Theory (IRT) Alternatives." The 1999 graduate students were: April Zenisky, University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Mentors-Ron Hambleton and Steve Sireci; Amy Hendrickson, University of Iowa, Mentor-Michael Kolen; and Vinaya Kelkar, University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Mentors-Linda Wightman and Ric Luecht.

Since the program's inception in 1998, it has appointed eight scholars.
