AAMC Inducts 1999-2000 Leadership Team
Washington, D.C., October 25, 1999 -- The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) announces the Association's 1999-2000 leadership team at the AAMC's 110th annual meeting in Washington, D.C. Joining AAMC President Jordan J. Cohen, M.D., on the Association's Executive Council this year are:
- AAMC Chair-Ralph W. Muller, president, University of Chicago Hospitals.
- AAMC Chair-elect-George F. Sheldon, M.D., professor and chair of surgery, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine.
- Council of Deans (COD) Chair-Ralph Snyderman, M.D., chancellor for health affairs and executive dean, Duke University School of Medicine. The COD membership is compromised of all 125 U.S. medical schools.
- Council of Teaching Hospitals and Health Systems (COTH) Chair-J. Richard Gaintner, M.D., chief executive officer, Shands Healthcare. The COTH membership includes nearly 400 of the nation's major teaching hospitals and health systems.
- Council of Academic Societies (CAS) Chair-Paul L. McCarthy, M.D., professor of pediatrics and director of the section of general practices, Yale University School of Medicine. The CAS represents nearly 88,000 clinical and basic sciences U.S. medical school faculty members through its 91 professional organizations.
- Organization of Resident Representatives (ORR) Chair-Rebecca Minter, M.D., University of Florida College of Medicine. The ORR comprises representatives from 24 specialty organizations and provides a channel for the nation's 102,000 residents to express their views on health care and medical education.
- Organization of Student Representatives (OSR) Chair-Craig Nicholson, a third-year medical student at New York Medical College. The OSR has student representatives from each of the 125 U.S. medical schools and provides representation for the entire undergraduate medical student body to the academic medicine community.

The Association of American Medical Colleges represents the 125 accredited U.S. medical schools; the 16 accredited Canadian medical schools; some 400 major teaching hospitals, including 74 Veterans Administration medical centers; 91 academic and professional societies representing nearly 88,000 faculty members; and the nation's 67,000 medical students and 102,000 residents.
