Resignation of NIH Director Harold Varmus, M.D.,
Statement From
Jordan J. Cohen, M.D.,
President,
Association of American Medical Colleges
October 7, 1999
Harold Varmus, M.D., will be remembered as one of the great NIH directors and forever linked with the explosion of scientific knowledge and promise synonymous with the decade of the 1990s. His six-year tenure at the helm of world's premier research agency has been filled with unparalleled growth and achievement to the benefit of all Americans.
Dr. Varmus' contributions are many and lasting, from his adept handling of the political minefields of science policy, to his appointment of a first-class NIH leadership team, to his ability to effectively communicate the wonders of science to the public, and, finally, to the expansion of the NIH budget from $10 billion to nearly $16 billion.
While we are disappointed that Dr. Varmus' NIH directorship has come to an end, we are pleased that he will continue as a leader and prominent spokesperson for the American scientific community while at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
