NRMP To Include Pediatric Critical Care
Medicine Specialty Match

Washington, D.C., October 6, 1999 -- The The National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) and the organization of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Program Directors announce the establishment of the Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Specialty Match. The first match will be for training beginning July 1, 2001. Registration with the NRMP for the new fellowship will begin in December 1999 and will continue through October 11, 2000. Applicants will learn whether they matched into the program on November 8, 2000.

"The NRMP is pleased to welcome Pediatric Critical Care Medicine as a participant in the specialty match program," said NRMP Executive Director Robert L. Beran, Ph.D. "Their participation will provide applicants with a uniform and systematic approach to their application for fellowships in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine and should also greatly assist program directors in their selection process."

In addition to conducting the general Match in the spring of each year, the NRMP provides matching services for many specialties throughout the year. The NRMP matches over 3,000 residents annually in 20 fellowships. The subspecialties include:

"The training program directors in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine have considered this issue very carefully and made a decision which they feel is in the best interest for the field of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine as well as being best for those individuals applying for fellowships," said Richard J. Brilli, M.D., associate professor and chair of the Pediatric Fellowship Director's Section for Society of Critical Care Medicine.

Individuals interested in entering the Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Specialty Match, should call the NRMP office at 202-828-0676 or Dr. Brilli at 513-636-4259.

The National Resident Matching Program was established in 1952 to provide a mechanism that would end the chaotic state of applicants and programs being forced to make commitments before all options could be considered. In addition, the program provides a common time for the announcement of the appointments, as well as an agreement for programs and applicants to honor the commitment to offer and accept an appointment if a match results.
