Match Day 1999
Statement From Jordan J. Cohen, M.D.
President, Association of American Medical Colleges
March 18, 1999
The results of Match Day 1999 are a testament to the strength and preparedness of this year's class of U.S. medical school seniors. We are pleased that 94 percent, or 13,707 U.S. seniors that participated in the match, received a first-year residency training position. In addition, it is particularly encouraging that over 80 percent of these individuals learned that they will spend the next three-to-seven years or more at a residency program they identified as one of their top three choices. Also, while the match is not the perfect gauge for assessing the future practice plans of new physicians, the number of U.S. medical school seniors entering a first-year residency position in one of the primary care specialties once again exceeded 50 percent. The Association views this as a positive trend.
The National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) should also be applauded for the changes to the match process implemented this year. In an effort to make the match as fair and efficient as possible, the NRMP moved to a web-based system and provided more time for unmatched applicants to locate and secure a residency position. Overall, Match Day should be considered a success.
