OSR Western Region Update

November 2009

Season's Greetings from the Western Region! After a wonderful, and possibly record, showing from the western region at the AAMC Annual Meeting in Boston, we hope to keep up the momentum with continued involvement and attendance at the upcoming quadrennial Joint Regional Meeting in Austin, TX scheduled to take place April 17 - 21, 2010. Planning for the joint regional meeting has already begun, but we continue to look for input from all schools regarding possible hot topics to address or speakers to bring to the meeting.

As the incoming members of the OSR Ad Board prepare to take on their new roles as the primary representatives of their regions and committees, we would like to extend a gracious thank you to all of the outgoing members of the OSR Ad Board for their tireless service and commitment to medical students across the country. The Western Region would especially like to thank past-Chair, Tony Hazel, for his irreplaceable work ethic and wonderful leadership as Chair. As was mentioned in the September 2009 update, health care reform continues to roll on in Washington, D.C., as the House of Representatives has taken a key step forward by passing the Affordable Health Care for America Act (H.R. 3962). The bill now moves on to the Senate where there are likely to be many new issues to address in order to ensure passage. Be sure to keep track of the bill's progress by continuing to take a look at the updates sent out by the OSR Legislative Affairs Committee or visiting the AAMC web site's section on Government Affairs. If you have any questions regarding legislative affairs please be sure to contact our western region delegate to the committee, Ryan Padrez, or national legislative affairs delegate Thure Caire.

Finally, please be on the lookout for the notes from business meetings of the western region that took place at the recent AAMC Annual Meeting in Boston. They should be posted onto the blackboard web site soon and may be very informative, especially with regards to the curricular reform processes that continue to take place at many of the schools in the Western Region. As always, if you ever have any questions or concerns about the AAMC and the Western Region, please feel free to e-mail me and I will do my best to help you.
