OSR Southern Regional Update

June 2009

Greetings from the South! It was great seeing everyone at the regional meeting April 23-26, 2009, in Dallas, Texas. I want to thank the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas for hosting this joint SGSA, MAS, and OSR meeting. The southern region had a great time discussing issues facing the future of medical education, while enjoying the sites and sounds of Dallas. The agenda included sessions on the Match process, finance 101 for the medical student, and the holistic review process. Some topics discussed in business meetings were:

  • Implementation of systems-based curriculum
  • Use of computerized exams in curricula
  • Standardization of 3rd and 4th year clerkships across multiple campuses

On the meeting web site, presentations from the sessions during the meeting have been made available. On Blackboard, business meeting topics have been posted to further foster continued discussion on these topics.

I would like to congratulate the new officers elected during the regional meeting: New SOSR Regional Officers:

  • Regional Chair Elect: Sarah Smith
  • Communications - Bill Teeter
  • Community & Diversity - Phillip Murray
  • Legislative Affairs - David Friedlander
  • Medical Education - Elizabeth Schulz
  • Student Affairs - Joe Thomas

I look forward to working with you all. Thank you to all SOSR members for making the regional meeting a success and I anticipate continuation of the conversations began in Dallas at the annual meeting in Boston.
