OSR Communications Update

June 2008

Summer newsletter
The Communications team is currently working on a summer newsletter, which we hope to distribute by the end of July. This newsletter is intended to update OSR members about Blackboard-issues/discussions as well as ongoing issues relevant to them from a medical student perspective, including topics that may be pertinent to other Ad Board committees (e.g. legislative affairs, student affairs, etc). To this end, the Communications team hopes to partner more closely with these committees in the development of this summer newsletter, the goal of which (among other objectives) is to keep OSR members engaged in AAMC activities during the lead-up to the national meeting.

Outstanding issues:

  • Content? Committee partnership? Regional versus national? Distribution?

"Information sheet" development
New members of the Communications team have expressed concern that new OSR members may be unable to take full advantage of regional and national AAMC OSR meetings due to a lack of information about the structure and function of their own medical schools; accordingly, such members may be unable to capitalize upon OSR sessions and meetings. Accordingly, the Communications team is contemplating development of an "information sheet" to be distributed to OSR members prior to commencement of the national/regional meetings. This information sheet would prompt OSR members to gather the appropriate information about their schools in order to participate fully in planned OSR sessions. The Communications team is in the early phase of this proposal and would appreciate criticism/feedback from Ad Board members.

Outstanding issues:

  • Feasibility? Incentives? Content? Distribution?

Encouraging Blackboard use
The Communications team recognizes its central role in facilitating Blackboard use and has re-committed itself to encouraging more frequent use of Blackboard. This has been partially accomplished through periodic email reminders of Blackboard updates prepared and distributed by regional Communications team members.

Outstanding issues:

  • Email updates/summaries-content? Timing? Regional versus national topics? Integration with other committees? Further delineation of Communication's team role within the new Blackboard environment.
