Chair-Elect Update
June 2008
2008 Annual Meeting
Planning for the 2008 AAMC-OSR Annual Meeting in San Antonio, Texas is
coming along very well. Taking suggestions for session ideas from the
2007 Annual Meeting surveys and Blackboard, plenary sessions will include
a joint OSR/GSA session on financial aid and student wellness, a continuation
of the largely successful Innovative Student Programming Showcase, and
a session on career advising and the Match. Breakout sessions will feature
a large variety of topics including professionalism and honor codes, pharma
issues and conflicts of interest, a session on what every MD needs to
know about public health, and a session on the business of medicine. This
will also be the second year the OSR will have the opportunity to work
directly with the GSA Minority Affairs Section at the career fair that
takes place at the Annual Meeting each year. Selected OSR reps will have
an opportunity to interact with college and high school students who are
potentially interested in pursuing careers in medicine. Last year was
our first time participating in the career fair and we received many positive
comments from GSA and OSR participants as well as the college/high school
participants. Sign up to be part of the career fair will take place in
advance of the Annual Meeting; watch the OSR Listserve and Blackboard
for more details.
Run for a National OSR Position
It is never too early to consider running for a national OSR position
such as Chair-Elect or National Delegate at the 2008 Annual Meeting. All
OSR primary representatives are eligible to run and while experience with
the OSR is always helpful, a passion and willingness to work hard are
the most important qualities in a candidate. Contact information for all
current members of the Ad Board is listed on the OSR website and I encourage
you to contact any member of the current OSR
Ad Board to get more information on his/her position. Listening to
feedback from the 2007 Annual Meeting Survey, we plan to try electronic
voting for the first time this year to streamline the election process!
Regional Meeting Updates
Congratulations to all new regional officers and thank you to everyone
who ran for a position at the regional meetings this year. The high level
of interest and enthusiasm seen at the regional meetings ensures a strong
and promising future for the OSR. Also, thank you to all our outgoing
regional delegates for their hard work and dedication to the OSR over
this past year.
Liaison Communication
OSR liaisons are a crucial link between the OSR and other committees and
groups within the AAMC. They are an excellent resource for any OSR representative
interested in addressing the questions and concerns of fellow medical
students. OSR Liaison Updates are posted on the OSR website and provide
a concise, student-oriented report on the activities of these committees.
Liaison updates are a valuable source of information on programs such
as the National Resident Matching Program, Electronic Residency Application
Service, and Careers in Medicine. Liaison updates can be accessed on the
OSR web site. View

New updates are posted within two weeks after liaison meetings; a schedule
of upcoming liaison meetings is available on the OSR
web site. Lastly, each fall a call for applications to open liaison
positions goes out on the OSR listserve. Please take a look at the list
of positions and if one catches your eye, consider submitting an application.
Current liaisons are a great source of information regarding what their
specific roles entail and contact information is listed on the OSR website
through the links above. You do not have to be an OSR primary rep to apply
for a liaison position.
