AAMC Humanism in Medicine Award Selection Criteria
Nominees should be actively involved in the medical student education
process and have demonstrated their possession of the five primary qualities
and characteristics outlined below.
The five criteria to be taken into consideration when selecting your
nominee:
- Positive Mentoring Skills
- Involvement in Community Service
- Compassion/Sensitivity
- Collaboration with Students and Patients
- Modeling Ethics of the Profession

Instructions:
Each primary Organization of Student Representative (OSR) in a U.S. AAMC
member medical school may nominate one candidate each year. Institutions
may resubmit the name of a previously nominated candidate, although the
written nomination should be rewritten and not duplicated from the previous
year.
- Nominees must be a physician (M.D. or D.O. degree) member of the school's
clinical faculty either in a tenure or non-tenure track.
- The institutional selection process will be coordinated and supervised
by the OSR primary representative and should include an organized
institutional nomination and selection process involving all medical
students.
- The nomination must be submitted on the provided nomination form.
- The signed and completed form must be submitted on paper and mailed
to the AAMC.
- The OSR primary representative and the Dean of Student Affairs
of the medical school must sign each nomination packet, on the contact
page.
- The OSR representative must notify the institution's nominee of the
award nomination at the time of submission.
- Please do not include nominees' curriculum vitae or resumes. These
materials will NOT be considered in the selection process and will not
be provided to the selection committee for consideration.
- The entire nomination packet (including contact sheet) must not exceed
ten pages in length. Please use a 12-point font. Do not use italics.
- For each of the six categories, please provide one typed page, 4,500-character
limit, including spaces.
- Nominations with less than two paragraphs of text per category will
not be eligible.
- Text describing the candidate must not exceed six typed pages; one
page per category.
- Nominations exceeding the ten-page maximum or not using 12-point
font, will not be accepted.
Suggestions:
- Describe the process for selecting your school's nominee.
- Convey how students feel about the nominee.
- Provide quotes and anecdotes (listing who they are from: students,
peers, patients, etc.) that describe the nominee's qualities.
- Give specific examples and accomplishments that exhibit the nominee's
humanistic characteristics.
- Relay how all sections impact students.
- Provide specific examples of humanism and compassion.
