Organization of Resident RepresentativesSpring 2005 Professional Development Conference Meeting SummaryThe AAMC resident physician branch, Organization of Resident Representatives (ORR), met in Tucson, Ariz., March 10-12, 2005, in conjunction with the AAMC's Council of Academic Societies (CAS). The theme of the meeting, "Tomorrow's Doctors, Tomorrow's Cures: Envisioning the Future," included informative presentations on the financial future of the healthcare enterprise and workforce needs. Some top-notch speakers challenged conference participants to envision and lead the charge for change. There were also two invigorating brainstorming sessions focused on program support for research during residency training and intellectual incentives in the recruitment and retention of clinical researchers. This discussion was preceded by a summary of an online survey sent to ORR members prior to the meeting. The survey reflected a strong sense of confidence in practicing evidence based medicine as well as an interest in conducting research once in practice. Heartening, too, was the overall sense of support for resident research by training programs. ORR member, Howard Blank, M.D., who recently served as the resident member on an AAMC Task Force examining medical school tuition and debt gave an in-depth presentation on the findings of the task force and lead a discussion on the potential implications for future physicians. The conference concluded with an engaging presentation by Mike Luckovich, the Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist of the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
