Administrative Board

Organization of Resident Representatives

September 2004

Dear ORR members,

The AAMC has been alive with new initiatives in 2004, and the Fall Meeting in Boston will bring the ORR together for its 12th Fall Meeting in conjunction with the AAMC Annual Meeting. The Administrative Board of the ORR met in September 2004 to finalize plans for the Annual Meeting, meet with the CAS regarding spring meeting planning, and to discuss continuing issues of interest to the ORR.

AAMC Initiatives of Particular Interest to the ORR

Faculty Development Initiatives

With many ORR members interested in entering academic medicine, we are lucky to welcome Diane Magrane, MD, as the Associate Vice President of the section on Faculty Development and Leadership Programs. Dr. Magrane is particularly interested in providing support to Junior Faculty and is developing an electronic newsletter which will be titled "Faculty Vitae: news and professional development for academic medical faculty". The ORR has been asked to help shape Faculty Vitae by previewing the prototype this fall and providing feedback and suggestions for future content.

Resident Antitrust Case Victory

As you know, serious threat of prolonged litigation and unproductive diversion of AAMC funds to fight the lawsuit over the NRMP has ended in August 2004 when a U.S. District Court judge granted the AAMC's motion to dismiss the resident antitrust case (Jung et al. v. AAMC et al.), due to the passage of legislation which clarifies that the resident match system does not violate antitrust laws. More >>

HEAL Web Resource

Dr. Jordan Cohen discussed the AAMC's strategic plan for support of the Health Education Assets Library (HEAL) which is a web based digital library offering free, high quality educational resources for medical education. Francis Nuthalapaty will be a member of the advisory committee to monitor progress of the library. An AAMC task force will develop a standardized peer review process. Feel free to investigate the high quality resources of this ever growing and expanding repository. More >>

Updated Web site

The AAMC serves a diverse community including students, residents, faculty, administrators and legislators, among others. The AAMC Web site has been updated and reorganized to reflect the diversity of roles the AAMC plays in the medical community. The ORR web page will be updated after the Annual Meeting to include the ORR membership directory of bios. This information will include the short biographical sketches each of you provided and will be a convenient way review the diversity of interests within the ORR membership. You can feel more connected to the AAMC with frequent visits to the web site. Not only can you find practical information regarding ORR meeting dates and locations, but you can also use the website to keep up on pertinent and newsworthy issues in the medical education community.

Looking Forward to the Annual Meeting

Excellent Programming Planned:

The agenda for the upcoming Annual Meeting contains sessions that are informative, educational and thought provoking.

The law and medicine are intricately bound and are at times at odds with each other. We have two sessions planned addressing ways in which legal matters affect the lives of those in medicine:

Leonard Glantz, M.D. is the associate dean and professor of health law at Boston University's School of Public Health, and will be addressing the ORR and the Organization of Student Representatives on Friday November 5th.

On Sunday morning from 10:00 to noon we will have an excellent speaker, Bruce Armon, J.D. to address the ORR with practical suggestions for young physicians. Mr. Armon will provide an overview of legal issues affecting physicians in their daily practices, will cover the "do's and don'ts" for negotiating physician employment contracts, including where to practice, issues to ask a prospective employer, the elements of a contract' salary information, and non-compete clauses. Visit his firm's web page for more information on Bruce Armon. This session will be very useful, and I want to encourage you to make sure your plane reservations home allow you enough time to attend this final session.

Participation from ORR members is always part of AAMC meetings, and we are lucky to have our own Glen Ault, M.D., MSED, as a panelist in a joint session with the OSR on "the Hospital Team, medical students working together". Francis Nuthalapaty, M.D. will be moderating a session on "Patient Care information Exchange in the Era of Duty Hours", and I am sure the session will be informative, thought provoking and provide concrete examples of ways to improve patient care information.

Grayson Wheatley and I will be running the session titled "Hot Topics" which will be similar to our session last year where we have an open forum to discuss timely issues relevant to resident education. Grayson will be leading the discussion, and I will record your comments, concerns, and ideas. Areas of interest raised at last year's session have helped shape the topics chosen for the spring and fall meetings.

New ORR Initiatives

ORR Bylaws Changes: The ORR Administrative Board has been working on updating and improving the language of our by-laws. In order to approve and institute bylaws changes, the ORR must be given a copy of the proposed bylaws changes at least thirty days in advance, and must be approved by the ORR prior to a final vote at the Executive Council of the AAMC. A separate email will be sent to each ORR member by early October which will include a summary of the changes and electronic copy of the proposed changes for your review. Please come to the Annual Meeting prepared to discuss and vote on the proposed changes.

Customized ORR survey: The ORR Administrative Board always seeks ways to improve the quality of our meetings, as we realize that you sacrifice time and energy to attend the meetings we plan for you. In an effort to improve our meetings to reflect the changing interests of the ORR at large, we will be using an online survey tool to elicit feedback from you after each meeting.

Letters to Program Directors and CAS members

Your participation in the ORR is important, and we appreciate your ideas, perspectives, and enthusiasm. Communication back to your program director and chair is important so that they know of the contribution you are making the ORR and realize the need to grant you time away to attend meetings. In addition, the Council of Academic Societies appoints each of you, and it is helpful to communicate with each of your Societies, and thanking each of them for sponsoring your participation in the ORR. We would like to offer to write letters to CAS sponsoring institutions as well as to your program director and chair, thanking them for supporting your involvement and service to the ORR. Please send us (or bring this information with you to the Annual Meeting) contact information for your program director and chair, so that we may send letters of thanks them.

Spring Meeting Preview

Plans for the Spring Meeting of the ORR with the Council of Academic Societies in Tucson, Arizona are well underway with programming centered around the theme: Tomorrow's Doctors, Tomorrow's Cures: Envisioning the Future. High-tech software utilizing wireless audience response keypads will make the introductory plenary interactive, and our Friday evening with CAS will be a tour of the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum and zoo followed by a sunset dinner in the desert on the beautiful grounds. Programming centered on predicted changes in medical education will be interesting and pertinent to residents and faculty alike. Mark your calendars and start planning for coverage for this special spring meeting starting Thurs afternoon of March 10th through Sunday morning, March 13th.

ORR Member Honored

ORR Administrative board member, Glen Ault, M.D. has been honored by the American College of Surgeons with the prestigious award for resident teaching. Congratulations to Glen! If you have been given a special award or made a unique contribution, please let us know by contacting Alexis Ruffin, alruffin@aamc.org, so we may congratulate you and mention your accomplishment on the ORR Web site.

Considering a Leadership Position in the ORR

Participation in the ORR at large is a wonderful two year appointment that allows you to participate in the AAMC and make new friends and contacts in academic medicine. If you would like to be more involved with the ORR, consider running for a leadership position as a member of the administrative board or as chair elect.

The Administrative Board is the ORR's executive committee and is composed of a group of 6 elected members and the chair, chair-elect, and immediate past chair. The board plans both of the ORR meetings, the Annual Meeting and the Spring meeting by discussing topics of interest, identifying potential speakers, and planning the social events. Specific ORR initiatives are developed and carried out by the board. In addition, the administrative board members interact with other AAMC members to forward the mission of the AAMC. The chair and chair elect cast votes at the executive council, ensuring that the resident voice is heard within the AAMC.

Who should run for the Chair Elect or Administrative Board?

Any ORR member who has enthusiasm for the mission of the ORR

Any ORR member willing and able to dedicate a few extra days a year to attend the administrative board meetings. Meeting dates are listed below in the following link.

Future meeting dates are available on the ORR Web site.

ORR Liaison Positions

If you would like to be more involved with the AAMC and ORR, but do not have the time for as many extra meetings as are necessary for an administrative board member, consider putting your name forward for one of the ORR Liaison Positions:

  • Group on Educational Affairs Steering Committee
  • Women in Medicine Steering Committee
  • Careers in Medicine

  • Update or submit your bio and digital photo before Sept 30th so you may be included in our membership directory. We are only missing a few names and faces, so make sure you get your information to Lisa Divers-Nelson, lnelson@aamc.org, so there is not a big blank space next to you name in the membership directory!

Thank you,

Jane E. D. Broecker, M.D.
