Organization of Resident RepresentativesFebruary 2004Dear ORR members, I write to you after the completion of a very successful AAMC executive council meeting at which the ORR Administrative board had a productive two-day meeting. This letter is to bring you up-to-date on several of our most recent efforts and to remind you of our Professional Development Conference in Santa Monica, March 11th-14th. Yesterday, a letter to all residents regarding the lawsuit over the "Match" was e-mailed to all program directors with the request that it be distributed to their residents. The letter strongly supports the "Match," and provides information regarding the facts surrounding the lawsuit. This communication was written and signed by me, but was the collective effort the ORR administrative board. A similar letter, signed by me and Yvette Martin, (Chair of the Organization of Student Representatives) was also sent to all students. This initiative to reach all AAMC affiliated residents and students is unprecedented and represents the AAMC's first use of e-mail with the goal of reaching such a massive resident and student audience. I have attached a copy of the letter here to ensure that you are up to date on our communication with the nation's residents. I am eager to know if you receive one from your program director and would appreciate feedback on how the letter was distributed to you, if at all. Please let me know what kind of response the letter generates among your colleagues. If you do not receive a copy of the letter in a few days, please ask your program director or Graduate Medical Education office if they received our communication. The majority of the ORR Administrative Board's time was devoted to finalizing plans for the meeting in Santa Monica, as well as brain-storming for speakers and sessions for the 2004 Annual meeting. Your input during our "Hot Topics" session has helped us create meetings that we hope will speak to some of your interests and concerns. Other issues which are on the current AAMC agenda include initiatives to improve medical education across all levels via the IIME (Institute for Improvement of Medical Education), improvement in the AAMC website, junior faculty development, and facilitation of continued excellence in medical research, to name a just a few. Future Meeting DatesI hope you have reserved flights and hotel reservations for our meeting in Santa Monica, and that you have registered for the meeting via the AAMC Web site. If you have not yet done so, it's not too late, but you should make your arrangements ASAP. If you will be unable to attend, please email Alexis to let her know. We also hope to see you for the Annual Meeting in Boston November 5th-7th, 2004. At the last Annual Meeting there was unanimous support for an ORR member list, complete with email address and a digital photo in the hopes of helping us all feel more familiar with our fellow members on the ORR. We have received digital photos and brief bio sketches from many, but not all of you. It is my hope that we can make this directory complete in time for Lisa Divers to include it in the printed materials for our spring meeting. Please e-mail your bio and photo to Lisa at ldivers@aamc.org by March1st, so that you can be included in the directory. I am looking forward to seeing you all soon in sunny California! Sincerely, Jane E. D. Broecker, MD |
