AAMC-ORR Ad Board and Executive Council Meeting Highlights

The February 2003 joint meeting of the AAMC Executive Council and ORR Ad Board was cancelled due to inclement weather in the northeastern United States. However, conference calls were held by both bodies to cover the essential agenda items

Executive Council Approves ORR Industry Statement

The "Resident Physician and Medical Industry Interactions: Guiding Principles" statement is the culmination of an ORR effort that was initiated at the Spring 2001 ORR Professional Development Conference. The AAMC Executive Council unanimously approved the document to become an official AAMC statement for distribution to residents. The statement will serve as the centerpiece of the ORR initiative to enhance resident physician understanding and advocacy for change in interactions with medical industry in GME. The ORR will release the statement as part of a "Resident Grand Rounds Toolbox" to be available in the Fall of 2003.

Professional Development Conference Venue Set

Final planning for the 2003 ORR Professional Development Conference is now complete. The PDC will be held April 26th - 29th in Philadelphia, PA. The program will focus on a variety of themes including:

  • Adverse Event Management and Disclosure: What to say when things go wrong
  • Educating for Professionalism in Medicine
  • Re-engineering Residency Education
  • Trading Places: Switching Between Private Practice and Academic Careers
  • A 2020 Vision for American Health Care: Making the Best of American Medicine Available to All

Members should expect to receive program information and registration materials in early March. Please remember to request time off for these dates in advance.

ORR Members to Conduct Scope of Practice Survey

As detailed in the January 2003 Ad Board Retreat Highlights, the ORR has been charged with helping the AAMC in its initiative to improve the quality of medical education. As the first step in fulfilling this charge, the ORR Ad Board has created an informal survey to be administered by the general ORR membership. The survey seeks to identify the scope of practice of recent residency graduates and how well their residency training addressed that scope. Each ORR member is requested to contact one recent residency program graduate and have them complete the survey. Preliminary findings from the survey will be presented at "Re-engineering Residency Education" session at the 2003 Professional Development Conference.

New ORR Liaison Reporting Requirements
