Mission-Based ManagementWhy do medical schools adopt MBM?Perhaps the most important reason is that it helps them to implement institutional strategy. Most institutions have already embarked on some sort of strategic planning endeavor. Others have decided on a procedure for determining which programs make key contributions to one of more of the school's missions and offer promise for market growth. But when they step back, they find something missing: a concrete plan for funding these priorities. This is where MBM comes in: to protect and support the academic missions-education and research-and provide a clear rationale and specific guidance for decisions about funding. MBM is critical at this juncture in history because so many schools now find themselves in a downward financial spiral. MBM has proved to be a successful tool in reversing a school's financial performance in a fairly short time frame. Absent data, it is very difficult for deans and department chairs to get a complete picture of how much money and time are spent (and on what), and what funds are coming in (and from where) for each division of the academic medical enterprise. |
