Exemplary service is defined as significant and sustained leadership, expertise, and/or creativity in addressing an issue or issues of importance to the SGSA. Nominees for this award shall have demonstrated, in activities appropriate to membership in the SGSA, an extraordinary record of accomplishment, collaborative leadership, resourcefulness, dedication, mentoring of SGSA colleagues, and commitment to the mission of the SGSA. This service can be as a medical school faculty or staff member; a GSA Institutional Representative or GSA Individual Member; the chair or a member of a GSA national committee or section (Admissions, Minority Affairs, Student Affairs, Student Financial Assistance, Student Records); a GSA representative to a AAMC advisory committee (AMCAS, ERAS, Medical Student Performance Evaluation [MSPE], MCAT, Definition of Underrepresented Minority, and so forth); or a GSA regional or national officer. This award may be presented annually at the SGSA spring regional business meeting. Procedure: A call for nominations shall be announced annually at the SGSA regional business meeting at the fall AAMC Annual Meeting and via email by the SGSA listserv. Any SGSA representative may submit a nomination to the Award Committee. No self-nominations will be considered. Nominations will be submitted to the SGSA Regional Chair, by means of a standard nomination form downloadable from the GSA Web site, by January 15th, preceding the annual regional spring meeting. The nominees curriculum vitae must accompany the nomination form. Two semi-finalist nominees for this award shall be selected in February, preceding the annual regional spring meeting by the Award Committee (composed of the Immediate Past SGSA Regional Chair, who shall serve as chair, the SGSA Regional Chair, SGSA Regional Chair-Elect, the SGSA Regional Vice-Chair, the SGSA-MAS Regional Chair, and the SGSA-MAS Regional Vice-Chair. The Award Committee shall forward the names of the two semi-finalists to the SGSA Steering Committee for consideration at a Steering Committee conference call in March, preceding the annual regional spring meeting. The SGSA Steering Committee shall select the award recipient. The recipient of the SGSA/Robert Bob Sabalis Award for Exemplary Service shall also be the Southern Regions nominee for the AAMC-GSA Award for Exemplary Service.
