GSA - Message from COA Chair

Greetings from the GSA National Committee on Admissions Chair

The Group on Student Affairs (GSA) National Committee on Admissions (COA) is a committee of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) that represents medical school admissions officers nationally.

The COA is composed of the following members: admissions officer representatives from each of the four GSA regional organizations; the GSA National Vice Chair; the GSA-Minority Affairs Section (MAS) National Chair-Elect; a liaison from the MAS; a liaison from the AAMC Organization of Student Representatives (OSR); and the Chair of the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions (NAAHP).

All GSA national committees are advisory to the GSA Steering Committee and to the AAMC. The COA receives and responds to information, requests, concerns and issues relating to medical school application and admission. The COA works closely with the GSA and other AAMC and external constituents in reviewing and deliberating on admissions issues referred to it. The COA also collaborates with the AAMC Division of Student Affairs and Education Services and its Section for the MCAT, Section for Student Programs, and Section for Student Services, as well as with the MAS. The COA may also be called upon to comment on, and make recommendations about, planned and ongoing AAMC projects, programs or services that relate to medical school application and admission.

While the COA is not a policy-making component of the AAMC, it can make recommendations for changes in policy and it is consulted when the AAMC is in the midst of deliberations about issues and policies related to application and admission to medical school. The COA's recommendations regarding any changes in AAMC policies and procedures are considered first by the GSA Steering Committee and, if approved, are forwarded by the GSA Steering Committee to the AAMC Council of Deans for further consideration.

On behalf of the Committee on Admissions, I welcome you to this Web site and hope that you will find it informative in answering your questions and of assistance to you in providing access to resources about medical school admission, the GSA, and the AAMC.

Robert A. Witzburg, M.D.
Associate Dean and Director of Admissions
