University of California, San Diego School of Medicine
Edward Babakanian
Edward Babakanian is the Chief Information Officer at The University
of California, San Diego Medical Center. He is a member of the Senior
Management Team responsible for all aspects of Information Technology,
Telecommunication, and Health Information Systems.
UCSD Medical Center consists of two hospitals, an NCI designated Cancer
Center, and multiple primary and specialty care clinics throughout San
Diego offering a comprehensive range of medical services, regionally,
nationally and internationally. In addition to his role as the CIO, Mr.
Babakanian is a member of the Executive Team contributing to the overall
strategic planning and management of the operational activities of the
UCSD Health System.
"Information Technology and services, appropriately deployed and used,
can be extremely effective tools in improving patient safety, clinical
outcomes and the efficiency of healthcare delivery process," said Babakanian.
He has been instrumental in creating an environment in which UCSD Medical
Center has achieved significant improvements in both the quality and efficiency
of health care delivery. In 2006, UCSD Medical Center was recognized nationally
to be among the top 100 most wired hospitals by the AHA and Hospitals
& Health Networks. In addition, the Medical Center received an award for
being among the top 25 most wireless hospitals, leveraging wireless technology
to improve the efficiency of the care process.
Susan S. Starr, MLS, Ph.D.
Susan Starr is Associate University Librarian for the Sciences and Scholarly
Communication, and Director of the Biomedical Library at the University
of California, San Diego. She has been with UCSD for 27 years, beginning
as a librarian at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography Library and
holding a series of administrative positions in other UCSD branch libraries.
In her current position she has administrative responsibility for UCSD's
four science libraries, provides leadership for the Biomedical Library,
and plans and develops UCSD initiatives related to transforming scholarly
communication. Dr. Starr holds a doctorate in psychology and a master's
in library sciences from the University of California, Berkeley.
During her tenure as Director of the Biomedical Library, the Library completed
a major renovation and addition project which more than doubled the size
of the existing structure. The new building features a grand reading room;
three library classrooms for instructing users in the latest information-retrieval
and knowledge-management tools; fourteen group-study rooms for problem-based
learning; a presentation practice room; a 24-hour study facility for graduate
and professional students; and an "information commons" of 80 computers
where students can consult sources and create papers and presentations.
Wireless technology is integral to the library's operations.
Helene M. Hoffman, Ph.D.
Helene Hoffman, Adjunct Professor of Medicine, serves as Assistant Dean
and Director of the Office of Educational Computing (EdCom), an administrative
unit of the School of Medicine (SOM) Dean's Office Division of Medical
Education (MedEd). She serves as a member of the MedEd senior management
team, providing information technology leadership and expertise in support
of the teaching, learning, and programmatic goals of MedEd.
Her administrative responsibilities include oversight of the EdCom Technology
Services group that that manages the computing and communications infrastructure
for MedEd, desktop support through the Tech Help Desk, and delivery of
all IT-based instructional and administrative resources. She leads the
EdCom Web Programming team that designs, develops and maintains computer-based
instructional, evaluation and administrative systems for the SOM curriculum
and its associated educational programs. She oversees the EdCom Curricular
Services group that works closely with core course faculty and administrators
to ensure that all IT-based resources are developed, updated, and delivered
as needed for each curricular segment. And, she is also responsible for
Room Scheduling and the AudioVisual units that support SOM and Medical Center
facilities in Hillcrest and La Jolla. Dr. Hoffman's research interests focus
on human learning and the educational application of new technologies
including virtual reality.
Dr. Hoffman received her Ph.D. in cardiovascular physiology and pharmacology
from UCSD School of Medicine. She was an NIH Research Fellow in the UCSD
Department of Pharmacology, studying membrane biophysics, and an NIH Research
Fellow in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics at the University
of Vermont College of Medicine, examining cardiac pathophysiology and
muscle biophysics. Following her postdoctoral training, Dr. Hoffman served
as Assistant Director of UCSD SOM's Tutorial Program where she developed
her interest in developing tools for teaching and learning.
