Groundbreaking week activities for the University of Kentucky (UK) Albert
B. Chandler Hospital, held May 30 through June 2, 2007,
provided an opportunity for UK HealthCare and the University of Kentucky to work
together to create awareness and support among many constituencies for the new
hospital that will serve Kentuckians with state-of-the-art facilities in a caring,
empathetic setting. The week marked the culmination of four years of research,
analysis, and planning by the executive teams.
Goals
- Generate statewide publicity and buzz around the new hospital's groundbreaking ceremonies. Create highly visible events that will unite all constituents.
- Communicate to medical center faculty, students, and the statewide medical community the university's commitment to forward-thinking, state-of-the-art health care.
- Include faculty and staff in the celebration.
- Thank and acknowledge major donors and special guests.
- Generate funds to initiate the Arts in HealthCare program.
Results
- Attendance at the groundbreaking week events included 350 people
at the groundbreaking ceremony, 450 participants at the academic symposium, 100 major donors and special guests at the appreciation reception, more than 5,000 faculty and staff at the employee cookout, and 870 guests at the groundbreaking gala.
- The groundbreaking ceremony provided a public relations/political venue to thank the state for the bond authority, the community for infrastructure support, and the city for its partnership. The event also provided an opportunity to reiterate UK HealthCare's larger purpose of serving the people and strengthening the land grant mission of the university.
- The academic symposium embodied the interdisciplinary approach
to education, which is the vision of the college of medicine, and
communicated the strides UK HealthCare has made and continues to make in becoming a premier subspecialty academic medical center.
- The groundbreaking gala, which featured singer Johnny Mathis,
was the largest gala event held in the central Kentucky area, and
brought together political, academic, cultural, and community leaders
in a celebration of what is to come.
- The Arts in HealthCare program raised $329,000, which surpassed the previously set goal of $250,000.
- The events reached a wide range of constituents and communicated
a unified and strategic message about the focus and future of UK HealthCare. It is expected that subsequent communications will
leverage the goodwill and positive energy created by these events.
