Annual Report – University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics

“Innovative Care, Excellent Service, Exceptional
Outcomes”

The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics annual report, “Innovative Care, Excellent Service, Exceptional Outcomes,” was designed to educate key stakeholders about the hospital’s five-year strategic plan for improvements in patient care, customer service, and clinical outcomes. With a press run of 30,000, this 36-page annual report reached a wide audience of state leaders, elected officials, health care providers, community leaders, consumers, physician alums, and the faculty and staff at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Goals

  • Encourage greater support for the hospital's vision to be the "Midwest hospital of choice" for innovative care, excellent service, and exceptional outcomes.
  • Give hospital and university leaders a valuable support tool as they advocate both internally and externally for a more patient-centered culture of high-quality, service-oriented care.
  • Profile the staff "hampions" responsible for overseeing implementation of the plan's top three areas of priority.
  • Support ongoing fund-raising efforts by the University of Iowa Foundation.
  • Keep the annual report's total costs within the budgeted $60,000.
  • Measure impact using the best available tools.

Results

  • A postcard reader survey found that 89 percent of 104 respondents said the annual report did a "good" to "very good" job of explaining the concept of patient- and family-centered care (the single most important focus of the strategic plan) and 90.3 percent of 103 respondents said the annual report improved their awareness of "innovative care, excellent service, exceptional outcomes" as a blueprint for improvement at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
  • Development officers from the University of Iowa Foundation used copies of the annual report during individual pitches to potential givers. Partly as a result of those pitches, 78 individuals each contributed $1,000 or more to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics during the subsequent fiscal year. These gifts exceeded $601,000.
