A Nobel Prize Celebration: The University of Massachusetts Medical
School and the Central Massachusetts Community Honor Nobel Laureate
Craig C. Mello, Ph.D., was a publication on the fast track. In October 2006,
the
Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet awarded the 2006 Nobel Prize
in Physiology or Medicine to University of Massachusetts Medical
School (UMMS) researcher Craig Mello and a collaborator. In late
November, the UMMS Office of Public Affairs and Publications received
word that on January 26, 2007, a large community celebration would
showcase and honor Dr.Mello’s achievement.With just weeks to create
a fitting publication to distribute to guests and commemorate the special
occasion, the race for the UMMS publications team was on.
Goal
- Create a special publication to reflect the achievement and tremendous
pride of a medical school and its community.
Results
- The book displays an unparalleled image of Dr.Mello accepting the
Nobel Prize from King Carl XVI Gustaf in Stockholm, Sweden, purchased
from the Associated Press.
- The book also describes the significance of the January 26 event, a
briefing on Dr.Mello's research and the promise of basic science, and
the place (UMMS and theWorcester community) that cultivates it.
- A timeline of the events on campus and in Stockholm that followed
the Nobel Prize announcement is present throughout the pages of the
publication, reminding the reader of the level of achievement UMMS
has reached.
- The book includes reprints of proclamations and congratulatory letters
UMMS and Dr.Mello received after the Nobel Prize announcement.
