Publications - Internal Audience Periodicals
Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine
On Guard
On Guard isn't your usual newsletter. Johns Hopkins Medicine leaders
wanted to create an internal publication for frontline caregivers that
tells true stories about how its mistakes have endangered, hurt, or
even killed patients. This four-page glossy, produced 10 times a year
and distributed to employees throughout Johns Hopkins Medicine, also
relays its successful efforts to improve patient safety.
Goals
- Give frontline staff practical information to help them eliminate
medical errors and other adverse events.
- Build a workplace culture that encourages error reporting and
open discussion of vulnerabilities.
- Explain technical issues for a wide range of workers.
- Communicate about unfortunate events in a manner that's
unflinching yet sensitive to caregivers involved.
Results
- Shortly after its launch, five focus groups consisting of
technologists, nurse managers, nurses, nurse assistants, and
other clinical professionals met to discuss the newsletter.
The newsletter received a positive response.
- The newsletter also received high marks from Edward Cahill, a
member of the Johns Hopkins Medicine board of trustees and
chair of its quality improvement committee. At a recent meeting
he remarked that the newsletter was well written and valuable.
