Dartmouth Medicine magazine's Web-Extras

Dartmouth Medicine is the major external publication of Dartmouth Medical School and Dartmouth–Hitchcock Medical Center. During spring 2006, Dartmouth Medicine began to augment its online edition with multimedia "Web-extras" to offer added depth and richness for readers of both their print and online editions and to drive more traffic to their Web site.

Goals

  • Create videos, audio clips/podcasts, and online slide shows that build off the print content in each issue of the magazine. Produce three to five Web-extras per issue.
  • Attract new readers/users and create a richer experience for existing readers. For example, using a Web-extra, readers/users can listen to a harp therapist play for patients at the cancer center.

Results

  • During the first year of posting Web-extras, Web traffic increased from monthly averages of 76,334 visits to 105,804 visits, reaching 103 different countries, up from 66 the previous year.
  • Considerable positive feedback has been received from colleagues, both at Dartmouth and other institutions, and from the public.
