Momentum

Momentum is the magazine of the Woodruff Health Sciences Center of Emory University. As its name indicates, the publication seeks to chronicle the forward movement of the center as it launches innovative efforts to meet unprecedented changes in health care. This four-color quarterly features in-depth stories that complement a biweekly e-mail and Web-based archive. With a circulation of 23,000, Momentum goes to: faculty and staff of the health sciences center—the umbrella organization for the schools of medicine, public health, and nursing; four hospitals; a 700-physician clinic; 13 satellite health centers; a geriatric center; a primate research center; and affiliates.

Goals

  • Explain the strategy of the entire health sciences enterprise. At stake are millions of dollars—
indeed survival—as the center tries to get everyone rowing the same boat, while informing and entertaining them.
  • Go beyond reporting news and change by showing how our efforts affect our patents, students, faculty, and staff.
  • Provide an insider's view to friends of the health sciences center.

Results

  • Demand: distribution bins empty quickly. Requests for extra copies and reprints are ongoing.
  • Marketing and public relations: the health sciences center uses the publication as a recruitment tool for faculty, staff, and residents.
  • Teaching: Momentum is handed out at Emory Alumni Association's annual conference and MiniMedical School programs to reinforce its topics to the community.
  • Philanthropy: development officers share copies of the magazine with donors who want to know more about specific opportunities for giving.
