University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine

Pitt Med Magazine

In 1999, the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine launched a new magazine to bring its stories to life. Pitt Med was designed to share the ongoing intellectual adventure of the medical school in an engaging and thought-provoking manner—one that is accessible to educated laypersons as well as physicians and scientists. In all of its elements, from cover to stories, Pitt Med would strive to reflect the school’s vitality to alumni, faculty, students, community leaders, donors, media representatives, and other important constituencies.

Goals

  • Provide a communications tool to cultivate goodwill, engender pride, and raise money for the medical school.
  • Promote the school'’s achievements in a smart and engaging way that reflects its rising stature.
  • Build support for a growing basic science program.
  • Develop a quarterly magazine to capture the attention of Pitt's key constituents by using original photography and illustrations and a "younger" and fresher approach.

Results

  • Since the first issue in fall 1999, circulation has doubled—with the addition of resident alumni and others—to 21,000. The magazine's budget has grown to $192,000 a year for the 40-page quarterly.
  • Pitt Med is helpful in showcasing the school to top scientists and is part of faculty recruitment efforts.
  • The magazine is sent to National Institutes of Health (NIH) agency directors, and the university has steadily increased its share of NIH funding, now ranking seventh nationwide. It ranked 12th seven years ago.
