"Coming Home" Video

After Hurricane Katrina, the Louisiana State University (LSU) Health Sciences Center Foundation staff was down to 9 from 22 and housed in temporary quarters 75 miles from home. The goal of sending a year-end report seemed dubious, yet absolutely essential. Donors needed to know the resilience of our faculty, staff, and students and how productively they coped with crisis.We wanted people to know our gratitude for their support.We also wanted folks to know we were moving back to New Orleans. Without a publications staff, we turned to a public relations firm to help us determine how best to convey our message. The result was a DVD that told the health sciences center story and also displayed our gratitude and optimism for the future.

Goal

• Create a visual remembrance of the LSU Health Sciences Center's challenges and recovery.
• Record the activities of the chancellor, foundation staff, deans, faculty, and students in their
  temporary buildings in Baton Rouge.
• Include news clips of the hurricane's destruction and the heroic efforts of medical personnel.
• Thank LSU supporters and let them know we still need their support.

Results

• The DVD was finished in May 2006. In June, foundation staff mailed the DVD to donors of $100 and above who included a stamped addressed envelope with their donation.
• Alumni and friends responded to the DVD with an additional 198 gifts totaling $45,805, which covered the project cost of $23,383.
• The DVD is now used to solicit funds to help rebuild programs.
• Administrators used the video for background information as the health sciences center programs were reaccredited post-Katrina.
