GIA 2006 Excellence Winner
The Robert G. Fenley Writing Award - Solicited ArticlesYale School of Medicine"A Film to Finish" From a faculty member, Yale School of Medicine staff learned of a recent public health graduate who had interned at National Public Radio, and was in Haiti preparing a documentary about AIDS prevention. Staff contacted the alumna, Amelia Shaw, and asked her to describe her experiences there. As it happened, Shaw was in Haiti at the time President Aristide was being forced out of office. Although she was eventually evacuated along with other U.S. citizens, before her departure she could be found in the thick of street demonstrations, and filing reports for NPR. The friendships she made through her documentary research allowed her to immerse herself in Haitian society. This, in turn, gave her a strong and informed perspective for her story. Shaw and managing editor John Curtis developed the outline of the story, which blended Shaw’s personal narrative of life in Haiti with her documentary work.
