Johns Hopkins Medicine

Dome

Dome, Johns Hopkins Medicine's flagship employee publication, is an eight-page tabloid newspaper that highlights important institutional objectives, arms employees with job-related information, and entertains. Featured stories are engaging, often including personal profiles and Q & As. Complex articles are juxtaposed with shorter, simpler pieces in order to appeal to a diverse audience.

Goals

  • Communicate complex institutional imperatives in an easy-to-understand, engaging way
  • Appeal to a diverse audience, ranging from entry-level workers to doctors, nurses, students, scientists and top administrators
  • Communicate across all of Johns Hopkins Medicine, which includes a medical school, three hospitals, a home care business, a managed care arm, and a string of primary care sites
  • Meet a consistent deadline

Results

  • The publication deadline has been met every month
  • Hopkins' government affairs staff regularly provide members of Congress with copies of Dome. Recently, they asked that the publication be mailed to the homes of legislators in districts surrounding the Johns Hopkins Hospital
  • Stories from Dome have been included in a Hopkins electronic newsletter that is sent to area business leaders
  • Frequent requests for more copies and reprints
  • A local community hospital and another academic medical center said they are modeling their newspapers on Dome
  • When complimenting a Dome issue, readers often say, "There was a little something in it for everyone."
