University of Washington Health Sciences/UW Medicine News

UW Medicine Community Outreach

UW Medicine supports a wide variety of programs and events to reach out to the public and give people in the region a chance to learn about the work being conducted on campus. The programs include a monthly lunchtime presentation on health topics for employees, volunteers, and patients; a Mini-Medical School composed of a series of evening lectures; and facility tours for students. Although most programs are adequately funded, the majority are low-budget projects that contend with additional budget cuts each year because of the state's declining economy. Most of the money pays for television and advertising. All programs are free and UW staff handle administrative and publicity efforts.

Goals

  • The school's challenge each year is to expand and enhance its programs, in particular, Mini-Medical School and our television program, Healthy-U Magazine.
  • Officials are constantly looking to present exciting new lectures and demonstrations that educate audiences about University of Washington medical science, patient care and cutting-edge research.

Results

  • The success of First Friday at UWMC is measured by the attendance, interaction, and feedback. This program draws around 65 to 100 guests. Generally the audience is composed of individuals seeking medical action for themselves or a family member. Past speakers said that new patients who attended a session felt informed enough to decide whether to proceed with a certain treatment or procedure.
  • As for the Mini-Medical School, comments indicate that our participants developed an overwhelming appreciation for the resources available at UW Medicine. Students indicated that weekly contact with a variety of physicians and health professionals created a new confidence and trust in the medical system. We typically enroll more than 650 persons for a lecture hall that holds 500.
  • During every school year approximately 350 high school students tour UWMC facilities each month. During the summer more than 300 students and teachers participate in special tour programs.
