The use of animals in research remains a controversial-but still essential-element in medical discovery. Writer Lillian Kim examines whether in this age of new technologies and medical advances, animals really do need to continue to die for the sake of science.

Goal

  • To examine, in depth, the current reasons for and uses of animals in research conducted at
Emory University, the organized entities opposed to it, scientists' often conflicted emotions about
the use of these animals, the available alternatives and most importantly, the telling scientific
outcomes that continue to underscore the important role animals play in advancing medicine.

Results

  • A comprehensive article that elegantly depicts both the vital importance of animals to research
and scientists' respectful acknowledgement that animal research is a privilege that without public
support and trust could be lost.
