Duke University Health System - Office of Creative Services
DukeMed Magazine
The flagship publication of Duke University Medical Center (DUMC), DukeMed
Magazine
works to promote Duke's clinical programs and services and strengthen
readers' relationships with DUMC. The publication is mailed twice a year
to 45,000 people. Roughly a third are community/referring physicians,
a third are medical, nursing, and PA alumni, and a third are donors, faculty,
and other friends of DUMC. While it seeks to enhance Duke's image as a
leader in health
practice and research, DukeMed Magazine strives above all to be a helpful
tool for the institution
and a welcome resource for its readers.
Goals
- Create a single magazine (to replace Duke Medical Perspectives
and Duke Clinical Update)
that would appeal to the diverse audience: clinicians and non-clinician
donors, people with ties to
Duke and those without.
- Produce a publication that would not only interest all Duke readers,
but strengthen each group's
connection with DUMC, i.e., build a relationship with the community
physicians whose referrals
are so important to the institution's success.
- Provide articles that are both relevant to practicing clinicians-informing
them of new treatments
and services, etc.-and interesting to lay readers.
Results
- Replacing Duke Medical Perspectives and Duke Clinical Update with
DukeMed Magazine has
saved the institution over $100,000 a year.
- Over 100 new subscriptions have been received.
- Readers praise both content and design.
- It is used by the Dean to recruit faculty, by Admissions to recruit
medical students, by Development
and faculty as a fundraising tool, and by Government Relations when
meeting with legislators.
