University of Maryland Medical System: Where Maryland Comes
First
The University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) was created in
1984 and has since evolved
into a six-hospital regional system with academic, community, and
specialty service missions. In
September 2001, the Office of Communications and Public Affairs
was charged with producing a
comprehensive publication that defined UMMS while highlighting its
member hospitals and services.
Goals
- Present the value, leadership, reach and impact of UMMS to
several different audiences
- Convey the character of a complex medical community in a comprehensive
and understandable way
- Increase the reach of the UMMS Foundation to potential donors,
- Communicate how the medical system creates value among its
member hospitals and the community
Results
- Maryland legislative related $30 million in new support for
UMMS developmental initiatives
- Board members, donors, legislators and staff have all complimented
the publication
- Employees and managers throughout the system stated they had
a better understanding of the value created by the mergers
- Other offices have used the publication as a style guide
