Making the Case for Trials

Stanford University Medical Center-Office of Communications & Public Affairs Making the Case for Trials Clinical trials are fairly common when it comes to new drug or product therapies in medicine. Even rarer, are trials designed to determine the best options for surgical procedures. Writer Ruthann Richter examines an innovative clinical trial that compares pediatric surgeries being conducted with funding from the NIH.

Goal
To showcase the first clinical trial that compares the value of two operations for the same childhood condition, necrotizing enterocolitis. The trial is trying to answer the question about which procedure is better. It is also an opportunity to demonstrate to the field of surgery that this type of clinical trial can be completed successfully.

Result
The clinical trial in surgery will continue for the next two years, with eventually over 130 children entered into the program.
