Johns Hopkins Medicine
"Hopkins Medical News"
Hopkins Medical News, a magazine produced from Johns Hopkins
Medicine, presents medicine, science and life on the Johns
Hopkins medical campus for external medical and non-medical
professionals. The magazine helps reinforce Hopkins' reputation
as a medical leader and strengthens alumni, donors, patients
and community leader's pride in the medical school and Hopkins
itself.
Goals
- Achieve a balance of interesting, useful news to doctors
without being too technical for patients; informing donors
without boring faculty
- Tell the unvarnished Hopkins story, which may include
articles on poor ratings or the crisis in medical education
caused by clinical loads faculty physicians are carrying
- Make each headline interesting, each graphic appropriate
and each article informative
- Have timely information in each publication
Results
- A national public radio station in Washington D.C. has
invited columnist Melissa Sparrow to do broadcast version
her magazine column
- Over 200 patients made appointments with Hopkins specialists
as a direct result of articles in Hopkins Medical News
- Several hundred people not originally targeted for Hopkins
Medical News have become part of the mailing list
