"Flushing Out Cholera"

The number of cholera cases fluctuate from year to year in many third world countries. A team of Stanford scientists and engineers came together to find out where cholera hides between outbreaks.

Goals

Answer the following questions:

  • Where does cholera bacterium take refuge between outbreaks?
  • What coaxes it out of hiding?
  • Can we stop its emergence or predict the time and location to warn people at risk to take precautions?

Results

Scientists have begun to inventory every biochemical reaction that V. cholerae can undertake. This work could eventually lead to an early warning system for cholera prone areas or yield new ways to fight the disease.
