Advances in molecular biology have lead a group scientists
to come together to find a vaccine against the human papilloma
virus, HPV. This virus is sexually transmitted and is the
leading cause cervical cancer, the number two killer of women.
Anne Bennett Swingle tracks the scientists success and challenges
faced over the way to a cure.
Goal
Give a comprehensive overview of the Johns Hopkins team
trying to find a vaccine for HPV. The author also outlines
the dangers of HPV and the challenges the scienctists have
faced while trying to discover a cure.
Results
The National Institutes of Health have award the researchers
with a $3.5 million Vaccine Center Grant to support their
studies. Initial observation trials have also begun with 15
patients receiving regular treatments.
