Group on Educational Affairs (GEA)
Faculty Development Special Interest Group (SIG)
Background
The newly approved Special Interest Group (SIG) on Faculty Developement,
grew out of the Icicle Conference on Ambulatory Education. Of particuluar
concern at the conference was the lack of a mechanism for bringing new
faculty members and staff on board as faculty developers and for revitalizing
the work of experienced developers.
Purpose
The purpose of this (SIG) is to promote communication and collaboration
among those medical school faculty members and staff involved in the direct
delivery of faculty development activities. The SIG provides opportunities
for both persons new to faculty development to learn essential skills
for their role and for experienced developers to continue their professional
growth. In addition, the SIG serves as a forum for communicating to deans
and department chairs the importance to institutional vitality of an investment
in faculty develpment programs.
Membership
Currently there are over 100 members of the Faculty Development SIG.
Membership is open to faculty and staff interested in renewing or initiating
skills for leading programs in one or more areas of faculty development,
e.g., teaching improvement, career development, curricular leadership,
and educational scholarship the SIG is organized around a regional structure
with the conveners in each region serving as a steering committee that
will guide the work of the Faculty Development SIG. Regional conveners
will be elected at the AAMC Annual Meeting.
