Research in Medical Education (RIME) Conference
Abstract Session Moderator,
Session Observer, or External Reviewer
The RIME Section of GEA invites you to indicate if you are interested
in helping with the annual RIME conference by serving as an abstract session
moderator, session observer, or external reviewer.
Abstract Session Moderator
The abstract sessions are a popular aspect of the RIME program, where
pilot and smaller studies are presented. Usually, there are 6 presentations,
each one being 10 minutes in length, and with a 5 minute period for questions.
The role of the abstract moderator is 1) to keep the sessions on time
and the presentations within a strict 15 minute time slot; 2) to have
one question prepared for each presenter; and 3) to moderate questions
from the audience.
Session Observer
An important aspect of the RIME program committee's work is to evaluate
the sessions, including the RIME paper sessions, the RIME symposia, and
RIME invited reviews. The evaluations provided by observers contribute
to the overall evaluation of the program, as well as inform the planning
for future meetings. In addition, the constructive feedback from observers
is shared with the presenters. The role of the session observer is to
rate the presenters, using a structured form, on various aspects of their
presentation.
External Reviewer
All of the submissions to the RIME program committee are submitted to
external review. The role of the external reviewer is twofold. One is
to assist the RIME Committee in the selection of papers and abstracts
for presentation at the Conference and publication of papers in the Proceedings.
The other is to provide substantive constructive feedback to the authors.
The reviewers' written comments are particularly important to the review
process. All external reviewers' comments are provided to the authors,
to be used in improving both accepted papers and those not selected for
the program. External reviews are conducted in April of each year, normally.
Each of the above roles provides an excellent opportunity both to contribute
your expertise and to learn more about research in medical education.
