Steering Committee Positions

SGEA Chair Responsibilities

Two-Year Term

  1. Represent the SGEA at the annual AAMC meetings a. Serve as a member of the National GEA steering committee
    i. Responsible for attending National GEA Steering Committee meetings and reporting SGEA activities
    ii. Serve as the liaison between the GEA and the SGEA Steering Committees
    iii. Participate in planning the Annual GEA meeting
    iv. Provides information and participate in discussions about national and local initiatives of the GEA with the membership of the SGEA
    b. Report on SGEA projects
    c. Obtain information about initiatives being planned or implemented by the GEA
  2. Chair the SGEA Steering Committee and Business Meetings held at the AAMC and the SGEA Annual Meetings
    a. Conduct and set the agenda for meetings of the SGEA and its Steering Committee
    b. Report the activities of the national GEA c. Lead planning and implementation of projects for the SGEA/GEA
  3. Be the ombudsman for stimulating, initiating and/or implementing GEA initiatives by the SGEA at both the SGEA and AAMC annual meetings

SGEA Past-Chair Responsibilities

  1. Support Transition of Incoming SGEA Chair
    a. Organize and forward to incoming chair key documents and resources
    b. Be available to incoming Chair for consultation/guidance
  2. Serve as an active member of the SGEA steering committee
  3. Chair the nominating committee for vacant Steering Committee positions
  4. Serve in the role of Chair in the event current Chair is unavailable to conduct the annual Spring meeting
  5. Inform discussions based on knowledge of historical, political and procedural precedents
  6. Actively support ongoing SGEA initiatives including:
    a. Medical Education Scholarship Awards
    b. Member-at-large initiatives

SGEA Chair-Elect Responsibilities

  1. Serve as SGEA Treasurer
    a. Collect annual dues from regional institutions each fall.
    b. Acknowledge receipt of dues from institutions.
    c. Send one reminder dues letter to non-paying institutions in spring.
    d. Establish and maintain bank account.
    e. Pay SGEA expenses as needed.
    f. Maintain financial records.
    g. Maintain and update institutional contact list for dues collection.
    h. Provide a financial report at the SGEA Steering Committee and SGEA Business meetings.
  2. Serve as a Member of the SGEA steering committee
    a. Participate in planning agenda for SGEA Steering Committee meeting during the annual AAMC meetings
    b. Participate in planning the spring SGEA business meeting during the annual AAMC meetings.
  3. Assist with stimulation, initiation and/or implementation of GEA initiatives by the SGEA at both the SGEA and AAMC annual meetings
  4. Assist SGEA Chair with duties as needed.

SGEA Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME) Representative Responsibilities

Two-Year Term

  1. Represent the SGEA at the National UGME meeting at the annual AAMC meetings
    a. Member of the National UGME steering committee
  2. Assist in planning the national UGME meeting at the AAMC annual meeting
  3. Participate in discussions about national and local initiatives related to UGME
    a. Report on any SGEA UGME projects
    b. Obtain information about initiatives being planned or implemented by the national UGME
  4. Conduct the meeting of the UGME at the annual SGEA meeting
    a. Report the activities of the national SGEA
    b. Plan and implement projects for the SGEA related to UGME
  5. Member of the SGEA steering committee
    a. Plan agenda for SGEA steering committee meeting at the annual AAMC meetings
    b. Participate in planning the annual SGEA business meeting at the annual AAMC meetings
  6. Be the ombudsman for stimulating, initiating and/or implementing UGME initiatives at the SGEA and AAMC annual meetings

SGEA Graduate Medical Education (GME) Section Representative Responsibilities

Two-Year Term

1. Represent the SGEA at the National GME Section Meeting held during the annual AAMC meetings
a. Serve as a member of the National GME steering committee
1. Assist in planning the national GME Section Meeting at the AAMC annual meeting
2. Participate in monthly conference calls and other discussions about national and local GME initiatives
b. Report on SGEA GME projects c. Obtain information about initiatives being planned or implemented by the national GME Section 2. Conduct the Section Meeting of the GME at the annual SGEA meeting a. Report the activities of the national SGEA b. Plan and implement GME projects for the SGEA 3. Serve on the SGEA steering committee a. Participate in planning agenda for SGEA Steering Committee meeting during the annual AAMC meetings b. Participate in planning the spring SGEA business meeting during the annual AAMC meetings 4. Facilitate and nurture GME activities, particularly at the SGEA and AAMC annual meetings a. Promote the SGEA Mentor Program for abstract authors b. Promote feedback to presenters at the SGEA spring meeting

SGEA Continuing Medical Education (CME) Section Representative Responsibilities

Two-Year Term

1. Represent the SGEA at the National CME Section Meeting at the annual AAMC meetings a. Member of the National CME steering committee 1. Assist in planning the national CME Section Meeting at the AAMC annual meeting 2. Participate in monthly conference calls and other discussions about national and local initiatives related to CME b. Report on any SGEA CME projects c. Obtain information about initiatives being planned or implemented by the national CME Section and share it with SGEA Steering Committee 2. Conduct the Section Meeting of the CME at the annual SGEA meeting a. Report the activities of the national SGEA b. Plan and implement projects for the SGEA related to CME 3. Member of the SGEA steering committee a. Plan agenda for SGEA Steering Committee meeting at the annual AAMC meetings b. Participate in planning the annual SGEA business meeting at the annual AAMC meetings 4. Liaison to UGME and GME colleagues in the SGEA to foster communications and collaboration across the medical education continuum in the Southern Region of the GEA 5. Be the ombudsman for stimulating, initiating and/or implementing CME initiatives at the SGEA and AAMC annual meetings
