About This Issue: Transitions in Leadership

Transitions in Leadership: Faculty Vitae, Spring 2006

Transitions are the natural consequence of responsiveness to challenge and to change. The spring 2006 issue of Faculty Vitae explores a variety of perspectives on transitions for individual faculty leaders and for academic medical organizations as they adapt to meet the missions of clinical care, education, research, and community service.

The Feature describes the growth of support for medical faculty affairs as a recognized function of medical schools in the United States. The Leadership Lesson and Perspectives sections address practical and exemplary approaches to assuming leadership positions.  The Spotlight is on a recent AAMC-sponsored program to examine the challenges of medical education scholarship.

Managing the Functions of Faculty Affairs in Medical Schools describes the historical and contemporary functions of managing polices and professional development of medical faculty in the United States.

Preparing for New Leadership Roles presents actions for managing leadership transitions, from the time of serious contemplation to acceptance to stepping into the role on the first day of appointment. The overview is supported by two case discussions: "Dr. Smith's First Leadership Position"—negotiating for the clerkship, and "From Department Chair to Medical School Dean"—transitioning to greater circles of influence.

Perspectives asks four leaders—two medical school deans, a faculty affairs dean and a new association president—to narrate their experience in preparing for significant leadership roles.

Spotlight on GEA's 2006 Consensus Conference on Educational Scholarship provides background on the challenges of promoting educational scholarship and medical educators within academic medicine through the voices of organizers of  a five-year project to advance Educational Scholarship.

In addition to the main articles, readers should take note of new resources for professional development at the AAMC:

Nominations are being accepted for the 2007 Women in Medicine Leadership Development Award. This is an opportunity to recognize women who have made substantive contributions to the advancement of women in medicine. Submission deadline is July 28.
