Faculty Vitae - September 2004
News and professional development for academic medical faculty
Welcome
to the first issue of the electronic publication, Faculty Vitae,
from the Association of American Medical College's new section on Faculty
Development and Leadership (FD&L) programs!
This prototype issue is being distributed to members of the organizations
that FD&L supports, Women in Medicine (WIM)
and the Faculty Affairs Forum (FAF).
It is also sent to the members of Council of Academic Societies (CAS)
and Council of Deans (COD). It is available
to all of the academic community through the AAMC web site. Our goal is
to reach all 100,000-plus medical faculty with an on-line source to enhance
capabilities and community of faculty through professional development.
The theme of this first edition is Faculty Vitality, that energizing
academic environment that results from faculty and institutional leaders
contributing to mutual achievement of goals and mission. I hope you will
take advantage of this first edition's articles to learn more about comprehensive
faculty development and faculty vitality, to use the tools in the
Leadership Lessons on
the Power of Voice to improve your speaking skills, to reflect upon
the Kudos & Quotes
and Perspectives
of our colleagues across the nation, and that you access the References
for faculty development opportunities and the FD&L
homepage. Inform yourself. Pass the links on to colleagues. And, before
you log off, give
us some feedback so that we can make the next issue in January even
better. To subscribe to Faculty Vitae, contact
us.

Spotlight: Dr. Jeannette South-Paul, University of Pittsburgh
Chair of Family Medicine
How does a Chair keep organizational mission and personal vision
viable? Dr. South-Paul describes the importance of personal and
professional relationships in maintaining balance and energy while
staying on the "treadmill" of academic life.
Leadership
Lessons: Do You Speak Like A Leader?
"Speaking like a Leader" requires attention to qualities
of vocal tone and projection, body language, listening and response
whether one is well prepared for the podium or caught by surprise
in the board room. Learn more about maintaining a powerful voice
from lessons of the July Women in Medicine professional development
conference.
Perspectives: on Faculty
Vitality
Never enough time and never enough money, but the academic mission
goes on. Your colleagues in the Council for Academic Societies
share their perspectives on how to address contemporary institutional
challenges.
Kudos & Quotes
Words of wisdom, powerful quotations, and accomplishments of faculty
leaders in academic medicine.

Feature: Professional Development and Faculty Vitality
As with any productive organization, our medical schools are able
to meet challenging economic targets, community responsibilities,
and academic contributions only when they foster skill development
of faculty and staff and reward productivity that meets institutional
missions.
Comprehensive faculty development supports
faculty vitality through both individual and institutional contribution.
