Faculty Vitae - May 2005:   Transitions

News and professional development for academic medical faculty

Diane Magrane, M.D.Change and the transitions involved in change are part of all of our lives. This issue of Faculty Vitae addresses the challenges of professional transitions. The Feature frames the concepts and presents some useful models that apply to both personal and professional transitions. Perspectives brings the voices of young and seasoned faculty in academic medicine to share wisdom from their personal experiences of transition to new positions. The Spotlight is on the minority faculty development program that evolved from a merger of Children's National Medical Center and Howard University Hospital's pediatric departments in Washington, D.C. The Leadership Lesson features part 2 of a three-part series on negotiation and focuses on effective preparation for negotiation. Finally, we've added a new resource for professional development programs -- a reference for programs offered by specialty societies.

If you are new to Faculty Vitae, you can catch up on previous lessons and features through links from the Faculty Development and Leadership homepage.
