Awards

Elizabeth H. Blackburn, Ph.D. and Janet D. Rowley, M.D., whose fundamental discoveries into the cause and progression of cancer opened new paths for the treatment of this disease, are being honored this year with the prestigious Landon-AACR Prizes for Basic and Translational Cancer Research. The prizes, offered by the Kirk A. and Dorothy P. Landon Foundation and the American Association for Cancer Research, are the largest offered to cancer researchers from a professional society of their peers. Each recipient will receive an unrestricted cash award of $200,000 and present a scientific lecture at the AACR Annual Meeting. http://www.aacr.org/default.aspx?p=3284

New Appointments & Promotions

Karen H. Antman, M.D. has been named Provost of the Boston University Medical Campus and Dean of the School of Medicine. A proven administrator and educator, she is an excellent clinician and clinical scientist, and she is an established leader on health policy issues. Antman comes to Boston University from the National Cancer Institute where she has served as Deputy Director for Translational and Clinical Sciences.

Donna Ferriero, Ph.D., Professor of Neurology and Pediatrics, has been appointed Vice Dean for Academic Affairs in the UCSF School of Medicine by David Kessler, Dean of the School of Medicine.

Julie Freischlag, M.D., the William Stewart Halsted Professor and Director of the Department of Surgery at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and surgeon in chief of The Johns Hopkins Hospital, has been appointed Editor of the Archives of Surgery, one of the JAMA/Archives journals published by the American Medical Association. A prolific researcher who has published more than 100 original articles and 27 book chapters, most on the surgical repair of the carotid (neck) artery and abdominal aortic aneurysms, she has also received outstanding teacher awards at every institution where she has served as a faculty member.

Meredith Hay, Ph.D. has been named the new Vice President for Research at the University of Iowa. The vice president for research also supervises more than 25 units, including the offices of Sponsored Programs, the University of Iowa Research Foundation, selected Central Research Support Facilities and centers, and a set of regulatory compliance units.

Keith D. Lindor, M.D. is the new Dean of the Mayo Medical School. Dr. Lindor is currently the Chair of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Department of Internal Medicine, Mayo Clinic in Rochester.

Sally J. Marshall, Ph.D., has been appointed Associate Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs, a key position that involves working to improve the quality of life for faculty.

David Muller, M.D. has been appointed Dean of Medical Education of Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Dr. Muller was co-founder of the Mount Sinai Visiting Doctors Program and Director of Medical Education for the Program.

Nanette K. Wenger, M.D., Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology for Emory University School of Medicine, and Chief of Cardiology at Grady Memorial Hospital, has been elected as Board Chair for the Society for Women's Health Research. Dr. Wenger's two-year term began in April, which marks the conclusion of her two terms as the society's vice-chair.
