Awards

Molly Carnes, M.D., a Professor in the Departments of Medicine, Psychiatry, and Industrial Engineering at the University of Wisconsin, was awarded the AAMC's 2004 Women in Medicine Leadership Development Award for individual achievement. She is Director of the U.W. Center for Women's Health Research - one of 21 National Centers of Excellence in Women's Health, as designated by the Department of Health and Human Services. Dr. Carnes directs four federally-funded training programs-three aimed at developing a diverse cadre of academic leaders in women's health and one aimed at training researchers to do multidisciplinary clinical research. She is also co-director of an Institutional Transformation Award from the National Science Foundation which focuses on developing and evaluating strategies to increase participation and advancement of women in academic science and engineering.

The FOCUS program at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine was awarded the AAMC's 2004 Women in Medicine Leadership Development Award for institutional achievement. The mission of FOCUS is to support the advancement and leadership of women in academic medicine, and to promote education and research in women's health, both in the academic health center and in the community. In 1994, FOCUS was launched in the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (CCEB) at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. FOCUS was established in response to large gaps in knowledge about the causes, diagnoses, treatments and prevention of diseases afflicting women. One of its primary purposes has been to promote the quantity, quality, and visibility of research pertaining to women's health. In 1997, in order to address the national issue of the under-representation of women in senior levels of academic medicine, FOCUS expanded its advocacy effort to include the career development of women medical faculty at the University of Pennsylvania. The leadership of the FOCUS program is comprised of a multidisciplinary group of women with specific expertise and interest in women's health and career issues. FOCUS on Health & Leadership for Women supports the twofold initiative of the advancement of women in academic medicine and the promotion of women's health research in order to foster the growth of gender equity in medical education and in the research and delivery of health care.

Christine E. Haycock, M.D., FACS, was honored with the Fifth Annual Alma Dea Morani Renaissance Woman Award presented by the Trustees of the Foundation for the History of Women in Medicine and the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. Dr. Haycock is a pioneering female surgeon, a gifted photographer, an authority on women's health, a mentor to scores of women in healthcare, a former Olympic athlete, and a co-founder of the Association of Women Surgeons. New Appointments & Promotions

Sharon Anderson, M.D., Professor of Medicine (Nephrology and Hypertension), and Vice Chairwoman for Clinical Affairs in the Department of Medicine, Oregon Health and Science University School of Medicine, has been appointed OHSU's Associate Dean for Faculty Development and Faculty Affairs. She will continue in her role as a Professor of Medicine.

Janet Bickel, M.A., a specialist in Leadership Development for Women and Minority Faculty in Academic Medicine, has joined the University of Wisconsin Medical School as a Visiting Associate Dean for Faculty. Her one-year term began in July 2004. Mrs. Bickel will conduct focus groups with medical school women faculty members at all levels to assess gender climate and institutional practices. Joseph D. Bloom, M.D., has been named Vice President for Medical Affairs and Dean of the Drexel University College of Medicine, effective October 5, 2004. Dr. Bloom previously served as Professor of Psychiatry at Oregon Health and Science University, where he also served as Dean of the School of Medicine from 1994-2001. Jessica Henderson Daniel, Ph.D., ABPP, Director of Training in Psychology, Department of Psychiatry and Associate Director of Leadership Education in Adolescent Health (LEAH) Training Program, Divison of Adolescent Medicine was elected Member-At-Large of the American Psychological Association Board of Directors. Her three-year term begins January 1, 2005. She is the first African American woman to serve on the Board of Directors. N. Lynn Eckhert, M.D., M.P.H., Dr. P.H., Director of Academic Programs for Harvard Medical International (the International Division of Harvard Medical School) is the new Chair of the Association of American Medical Colleges. Dr. Eckhert succeeds Donald Wilson, M.D., Dean of the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Dr. Eckhert is past Chair of the AAMC Council of Academic Societies. Thomas M. Priselac, President and Chief Executive Officer of Cedars-Sinai Health System, has been named AAMC chair-elect.
