Continued Evolution of Faculty Appointment and Tenure Policies at U.S.
Medical Schools, authored by Sarah A. Bunton, PhD., and William
T. Mallon, Ed.D., appears in the March 2007 issue of Academic Medicine.
The article, which is based on a 2005 survey of the 125 U.S. medical
schools, examines appointment and tenure policies for basic science
and clinical faculty.
- Tenure
in Transition: Trends in Basic Science Faculty Appointment Policies
at U.S. Medical Schools, authored by Mandy Liu, Ph.D. and William
T. Mallon, Ed.D., appeared in the March 2004 issue of Academic Medicine.
This article—based on a 2002 survey of 125 U.S. allopathic medical schools,
reviews of institutional policy documents, and interviews with medical
school leaders—explores and analyzes three trends in appointment and
tenure policies for basic science faculty at U.S. medical schools.
- The
Present and Future of Appointment, Tenure, and Compensation Policies
for Medical School Clinical Faculty, a complete report of the results
of a survey completed by administrators at all U.S. medical schools,
authored by Robert F. Jones, Ph.D. and Jennifer S. Gold, M.A., appears
in the October 2001 issue of Academic Medicine. The report provides
information on the current status of policies related to tenure, tenure
guarantees, probationary periods, and alternative clinical tracks.
- How
do Medical Schools Use Measurement Systems to Track Faculty Activity
and Productivity in Teaching? This article, authored by William
T. Mallon, Ed.D., and Robert F. Jones, Ph.D., appears in the February
2002 issue of Academic Medicine. It documents the findings from a study
that (1) identified 41 medical schools or medical school departments
that use metric systems to quantify faculty activity and effort in teaching,
(2) analyzed the purposes and progress of those metric systems, and
(3) identified six challenges that institutions encounter with these
metric systems.
- Status
of Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development Offices in U.S. Medical Schools,
authored by Page S. Morahan, Ph.D., Jennifer, S. Gold, M.A., and Janet
Bickel, M.A., appears in the May 2002 issue of Academic Medicine. This
article reports baseline data to describe how medical schools handle
faculty affairs and development responsibilities.
