About the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Agency for
Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR)
Mission is to prevent exposure and adverse human health effects
and diminish quality of life associated with exposure to hazardous
substances from various sources. PERTs

Epidemiology
Program Office (EPO)
The mission of EPO is to strengthen the public health system by
coordinating public health surveillance at CDC and providing domestic
and international support through scientific communications, statistical
and epidemiologic consultation, and training of experts in surveillance,
epidemiology, applied public health, and prevention effectiveness.
National
Center for Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD)
The newly formed NCBDDD seeks to promote optimal fetal, infant and
child development; prevent birth defects and childhood developmental
disabilities; and enhance the quality of life and prevent secondary
conditions among children, adolescents, and adults who are living
with a disability. PERTs initiated
National
Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP)
Dedicated to preventing death and disability from chronic diseases,
promoting maternal, infant and adolescent health and promoting healthy
personal behaviors. PERTs initiated
National Center
for Environmental Health (NCEH)
Provides national leadership by utilizing science and service to
promote health and quality of life. Focus is on preventing or controlling
diseases, disabilities, birth defects, or deaths that are caused
by interactions between people and their environment. PERTs
initiated
National
Center for Health Statistics (NCHS)
The mission of the NCHS is to provide statistical information that
will guide actions and policies to improve the health of the American
people. As the Nation's principal health statistics agency, NCHS
leads the way with accurate, relevant and timely data.
National
Center for HIV, STD and TB Prevention (NCHSTP)
Center works in collaboration with governmental and non-governmental
partners at community, state, national and international levels
with a focus on preventing and controlling human immunodeficiency
virus (HIV) infection and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS),
sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and tuberculosis (TB). PERTs
initiated
National
Center for Infectious Diseases (NCID)
Works in partnership with local and state public heath officials,
as well as, other federal agencies to prevent illness, disability
and death caused by infectious disease in the United States and
surrounding countries. PERTs initiated
National
Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC)
As the lead federal agency for injury prevention, NCIPC works closely
with other federal agencies; national, state and local organizations;
state and local health departments; and research institutions.
National Immunization
Program (NIP)
Provides leadership for the planning, coordination and conduct of
immunization activities nationwide. PERTs
initiated
National
Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)
Conducts research on the full scope of occupational disease and
injury that range from lung disease in miners to carpal tunnel syndrome
in computer users. PERTs initiated
Office of the
Director (OD)
The Director of the CDC is Jeffrey P. Koplan, M.D., M.P.H.
Office of Global
Health (OGH)
The OGH seeks to improve health worldwide by providing leadership,
coordination and support for CDC's global health activities in collaboration
with CDC's global health partners.
Public Health
Practice Program Office (PHPPO)
PHPPO strives to attain its vision through a focus on the public
health system. PHPPO focuses on four elements essential to an effective,
vibrant and strong community public health presence: the public
health workforce, organizational effectiveness, the scientific capacity
of public health laboratories, and the systems that manage public
health information and knowledge. PERTs
